The FABLE Calculator (FABLE-C) is an open tool created in 2018 for the FABLE initiative (fableconsortium.org). Since its launch, it has been developed, regularly updated and improved through the release of update packages by the FABLE Secretariat in collaboration with members of the FABLE Consortium (see documentation on Github). This archive holds three county versions of the FABLE Calculator for Kenya, for Laikipia, Samburu and Turkana. They build on the 2024 Kenya version provided by the FABLE Secretariat, which includes all mandatory update packages until 46 and further updates by the Secretariat in June 2024 (Mosnier et al. 2020, FABLE Calculator 2020 update, IIASA and SDSN). The authors downscaled the Kenya version to each county. The national data on crop production and yields, land use, livestock and population were replaced with county data. Diets are based on county dietary surveys and are included as averages by food product. The workbooks also include scenarios added by the authors for food imports, crop and livestock productivity, and climate change impacts on crop yields (based on ISIMIP crop model projections). To run a pathway, open a workbook in Microsoft Excel and go to the “PATHWAYS selection” sheet. The pathway marked with an x is the one that is calculated. Change the scenario names in that row. The results appear in the FOOD, PRODUCTION, TRADE and LAND sheets. The README lists the settings for the pathways and climate cases in the paper. The workbooks are saved with the No Growth pathway under SSP1-2.6 without CO2 fertilisation. The uploaded workbooks have been used in the following publication: Adaptation pathways for meeting future food needs differ across Kenya’s dryland counties.
