To investigate the effects of clonal reproduction and genetic exchange on the T. cruzi genome we selected two closely related TcI strains (P1, P2) and three hybrid clones that were generated from a P1 x P2 cross (1C2, 1D12, 2C1) (Gaunt et al. 2003). We have used whole genome sequencing to characterize both the parental and hybrid strains, as well as three clone isolates of each parental and hybrid strain after 800 generations of growth in vitro.
