Data for: The Malaria Vaccine Pilot Evaluation (MVPE) studies (2019-2023)
This dataset represents data collected during the evaluation period from May 2019 to July 2023 from hospital surveillance, household surveys and community mortality surveillance. Findings from the 24- and 46-month programme evaluations are published separately. Large representative household surveys were done in implementing areas of each country at baseline and after about 18 and 30 months to measure coverage of EPI vaccines, including RTS,S, use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), care-seeking for fever, and the prevalence of P. falciparum malaria. Surveillance was established in 18 hospitals for children aged 1-59 months in the three countries to collect data on severe malaria hospitalisations (including cerebral malaria), and meningitis. Community mortality surveillance was conducted throughout the implementation and comparison areas. Data on age, sex, residence, and vaccination status were collected during home visits. Verbal Autopsies (VAs) were conducted to identify deaths caused by injury, recognising the unreliability of determining other causes of death through VAs.
