LINEA baseline cohort survey data
The Learning Initiative on Norms, Exploitation and Abuse (LINEA) is a cluster randomised controlled trial (CRCT) of an intervention (radio drama and curricula) which aims to prevent age-disparate transactional sex in Tanzania. This dataset contains the responses to structured surveys conducted at baseline before randomisation to and implementation of the LINEA intervention, among a cohort of adolescent girls aged 13-15 years and a cohort of young men aged 23-50 years. The surveys covered topics including socio-demographics, schooling, sexual behaviour, receipt and giving of gifts in the context of sex, experience of violence, attitudes to violence, and attitudes to age-disparate transactional sex.
Additional Information
Researchers wishing to access these anonymised data should complete and submit a data application form, outlining the purpose of their proposed research, ethics approvals that have been obtained, and a list of variables that they wish to access. Applications for access will need to be approved by the LINEA Principal Investigators, Ana Maria Buller (LSHTM) and Joyce Wamoyi (National Institute of Medical Research, Tanzania); the request will be reviewed by the LINEA study team. Interested parties are advised to contact the study investigators to discuss their proposed research. If approved, before the data can be shared, ethical approval must be obtained from your host institution, and a Data Transfer Agreement with LSHTM must also be signed.

Description of data capture | Adolescent girls were randomly selected from lists of girls attending forms 1 to 3 in public schools in the study wards (small areas within districts). Young men were recruited from the same wards, primarily from lists of boda boda (motorcycle taxi) drivers who were members of driver unions working in those wards at selected boda boda stands. Individual structured interviews were conducted in person by trained interviewers, with the aid of tablet devices (questionnaires programmed in ODK). 400 girls and 460 men participated, whose data are included in the datasets. Data cleaning steps included checks for duplicate IDs, missing data, verifying age of respondent, consistency checks across related variables, and checks for correct application of questionnaire filters. The dataset was anonymised with each record assigned a unique numerical ID. |
