Alternative Title
A cluster randomised trial to evaluate the impact of a social empowerment intervention on intimate partner violence against women in newly formed neighbourhood groups in Tanzania
Description
The MAISHA study (CRT02) is a mixed methods evaluation, including a cluster randomised trial (CRT) of a small group based social empowerment intervention to prevent intimate partner violence (IPV) against women in Mwanza city, Tanzania. The trial was conducted among women in newly formed neighbourhood groups, with these groups being the unit of randomisation and (in the intervention arm) the unit of intervention delivery. This dataset contains the results of two surveys conducted among trial participants, a baseline survey conducted prior to randomisation and a follow-up survey conducted 29 months later. It comprises 1,265 records (each pertaining to an individual trial participant). NB: Data pertaining to a second trial of the same MAISHA intervention conducted among women receiving microfinance (CRT01) are not included in this record.
Additional information
This dataset is restricted in accordance with ethical conditions associated with the original study. Access may be provided to limited, anonymised data for the purpose of verification or use in ethically approved research, subject to several conditions being met. Researchers wishing to access data should complete and submit a data application form, outlining the research purpose for which they wish to use the data, ethics approvals that have been obtained, and a list of variables that they wish to access. The application will be evaluated by a study committee, in conjunction with relevant ethics committees. If the application fulfils the eligibility criteria, the applicant will be provided with a Data Transfer Agreement that must be signed by their host organisation. Once signed, an anonymised dataset will be prepared that fulfils the applicant’s criteria (where feasible) and transferred to the applicant using a secure transfer method. Publications and presentations arising from use of the data should include the following disclaimer: The author(s) is/are not part of the MAISHA study team and had no part in the design or conduct of the MAISHA study. The data analysis presented here was conducted by the author(s) independently from the MAISHA study team, and the inferences, views and opinions expressed represent those of the author(s) alone. The MAISHA team have had no role in this analysis, or the writing of this paper. The paper has not been read or approved by any member of the MAISHA study team prior to publication.
Description of data capture | 66 newly formed neighbourhood groups were enrolled in the CRT, with half (33 groups, 527 women) randomised to receive the MAISHA intervention and the other half allocated as controls (33 groups, 638 women) waitlisted to receive the intervention on trial completion. The intervention comprised a ten-session social empowerment curriculum delivered over a 20-week period. The CRT involved two surveys of trial participants, the first conducted prior to randomisation (baseline), and the second 29 months later (follow-up). The surveys collected data on demographics, childhood experiences of abuse, health, attitudes and norms relating to gender and IPV, relationships, IPV experiences and responses, children, and respondents’ interactions with their communities. The intervention and trial are described in more detail in the trial protocol. | ||||
