<note>Multiple records are included for each individual, covering the period directly before and after household enrolment in the CAPS trial. Participants’ identifying information, including names, locations, and study codes have been scrambled or removed. Surveys were administered to household representatives aged 15 or older so most school attendance information was proxy reported by parents or other caregivers. The dataset reflects cleaning conducted prior to analysis.</note>
This dataset merges a series of household surveys conducted in Karonga district, northern Malawi under the auspices of the Karonga Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) and the Cooking and Pneumonia Study (CAPS), a large cluster randomised trial conducted within the HDSS catchment area in which intervention households received two cleaner burning biomass-fuelled cookstoves. The dataset comprises children and adolescents who satisfied the following eligibility criteria: 1) resident in a household enrolled in CAPS, and 2) aged 5-18 years at time of enrolment. Variables include measures of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, school enrolment and attendance, and household cooking practices in the context of the CAPS trial.
