Dataset to accompany the publication, "A randomised trial of three face washing methods for the removal of Chlamydia trachomatis from the faces of children with severe active trachoma". Children aged 1-7 years with severe inflammatory trachoma, identified through community screening events in Oromia Region, Ethiopia, April-July 2023, were enrolled in a trial of three different face washing methods to remove C. trachomatis from their faces. Trial participants were tested for ocular C. trachomatis infection and their faces were then tested for C. trachomatis before and immediately after face washing to compare the effectiveness of each method. Their faces were then tested at intervals up to 8 hours post-wash to determine the longevity of any effect. Children and their care givers' hands were also tested for C. trachomatis to identify any indirect effect on hand cleanliness.
