Villages were sampled from each of the Local Government Areas in the State, with the exception of Gombe town. 50 households were visited in each village and women of child-bearing age were interviewed about any births during the previous 24 months. These data were linked to interviews with frontline health workers and with staff at primary or community health facilities which were providing maternal and newborn health services to those households. Similar surveys were conducted in 2015 - in preparation for future evaluation work in the State the sample of villages was increased from 40 to 80, and 75 households were visited in each village.
