Six rounds of data collection took place. Each round lasted three weeks, during which time around 350 women were observed. The content of the checklist was developed from the USAID-funded Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program’s tool for observing vaginal births and the following complications: postpartum haemorrhage, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia and newborn asphyxia. Before discharge, exit interviews were also completed with those observed women who had a healthy newborn at the time of discharge. This collection comprises the survey instruments and datasets for the clinical observations and exit interviews which were conducted twice a year by the IDEAS II project in Gombe State, North-East Nigeria between May 2016 and August 2019. Data were collected to: (1) support local decision makers; and (2) improve measurement of priority indicators for maternal and newborn health using data from observation of births in health facilities as gold-standard to test the validity of maternal reports on care provided, and evaluate the reliability of different data sources to provide comparable estimates.
