Data for: “From kitchen to classroom: Assessing the impact of cleaner burning biomass-fuelled cookstoves on primary school attendance in Karonga district, northern Malawi”

Data Description

This dataset merges a series of household surveys conducted in Karonga district, northern Malawi under the auspices of the Karonga Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) and the Cooking and Pneumonia Study (CAPS), a large cluster randomised trial conducted within the HDSS catchment area in which intervention households received two cleaner burning biomass-fuelled cookstoves. The dataset comprises children and adolescents who satisfied the following eligibility criteria: 1) resident in a household enrolled in CAPS, and 2) aged 5-18 years at time of enrolment. Variables include measures of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, school enrolment and attendance, and household cooking practices in the context of the CAPS trial.

Data Collection Methods

Surveys for the HDSS were administered at the household by field staff using paper questionnaires. Data were double entered in MS Access. CAPS data were captured electronically using smartphones and Open Data Kit software.

Privacy:

Multiple records are included for each individual, covering the period directly before and after household enrolment in the CAPS trial.Participant identifying information, including names, locations, and study codes have been scrambled or removed. Surveys were administered to household representatives aged 15 or older so most school attendance information was proxy reported by parents or other caregivers. During preparation for sharing, ID numbers were scrambled using Nesstar Publisher and Statistical Disclosure Control methods were applied using sdcMicro software. Demographic characteristics of 21 individuals have been suppressed, due to increased risk of identification.
