Évaluation du paquet d’interventions « Alive & Thrive » au Burkina Faso: données d’étude finale
The data are the endline survey of a before-after cluster-randomised trial evaluating the Alive & Thrive programme in Burkina Faso. This was a cross-sectional household survey (N=3,367), designed to select a population-representative sample of women of reproductive age with at least one live birth in the previous 23 months living in rural areas of Boucle du Mouhoun, Burkina Faso. The dataset contains information on the following: socio-demographic characteristics of the woman & her husband; household assets; reproductive history; antenatal, delivery & postnatal care relating to the index birth; illnesses the infant has experienced in the past fortnight; initiation of breastfeeding; current infant feeding patterns (food diaries); problems/difficulties experienced relating to breastfeeding; sources of information & advice relating to infant feeding; and the woman’s knowledge of optimal infant feeding practices.
Our target population were rural communes of Boucle du Mouhoun, Burkina Faso. Urban communes and four rural communes where another nutrition intervention was ongoing were excluded. Women were sampled using a two-stage approach. First, within each commune, we randomly selected three villages with probability proportional to size, using the most recent national census (2006) as the sampling frame. We then conducted a census of each selected village to identify all eligible mothers within the village. Women were eligible to participate if their infant, aged less than 23 months, was alive and living with them at the time of the survey. Thirty mother-infant pairs (10 infants were less than 6 months, 10 were 6 to 11 months, and 10 were 12 to 23 months) were sampled per village using stratified simple random sampling. A structured questionnaire was administered by trained interviewers using PDAs.
Data were collected using PDAs, which allowed us to inspect the consistency and quality on an ongoing basis – returning to the villages in question to rectify any errors identified. After initial cleaning, data were exported to Stata version 14 for analysis.
Burkina Faso
Data collection took place between 12th June and 25th July 2017.
Interview teams participated in two weeks training and pilot testing prior to data collection. Data were collected on PDAs allowing ongoing monitoring for quality and consistency checks. Field teams were given frequent feedback as to the quality of data, and where necessary errors rectified by returning to the village in question.
Women of reproductive age with at least one live birth in the previous 23 months living in rural areas of Boucle du Mouhoun, Burkina Faso.
Information that makes participants potentially identifiable (including names, detailed locality information such as village, GPS co-ordinates) have been removed from the dataset before sharing. The dataset is anonymised; all participants are identified by a numeric code that is not based on any potentially identifiable information (such as a social security code).
Ethical approval was granted by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Interventions Research Ethics Committee, and the Ministry of Health Research Ethics Committee in Burkina Faso.
