Data for: "Engagement with digital adherence technologies among adults with drug-susceptible tuberculosis: data from cluster randomized trials in five countries" – Data Codebook

Persistent identifier

10.17037/DATA.00004695

Description

This dataset was produced as part of five pragmatic cluster-randomised trials, with health facilities (rayon in Ukraine) as the unit of randomisation, conducted in Ethiopia (trial registration: PACTR2020087766949990), Ukraine, Tanzania, South Africa, and the Philippines (trial registration four countries ISRCTN17706019). The trials enrolled adults starting treatment for drug-susceptible tuberculosis.

The dataset consists of two data tables:

  1. a "baseline" table that lists participant characteristics collected at enrolment.
  2. a "doseday" table containing data on daily treatment adherence based on a proxy of participant engagement with a digital adherence technology (either a smart pillbox or medications-labels/text).

These data underpin analysis reported in a JMIR Public Health and Surveillance 2025 paper.

Digital dose-day confirmation: participant opens the pillbox/sends an SMS on the dose-day.

Manual dose-day: pillbox was not opened or an SMS was not sent on the dose-day, but the HCP confirmed with the participant the dose was taken and marked as such on the platform. This confirmation of the dose being taken could take place any day on or after the actual dose day, with the date it was confirmed captured on the platform.

Missed dose-day: pillbox was not opened/SMS was not sent on the dose-day, and the HCP confirmed with the participant that the dose was not taken at some later point. Confirmation of the manual dose and a dose not taken was from participant self-report.

No information for a dose-day: was when the pillbox was not opened/SMS was not sent on the dose-day, and there was no further information from the HCP as to whether the dose was taken or not.
