The SHARP-RESPOND study aimed to describe the characteristics and health-seeking behaviours of individuals with undiagnosed hypertension in low-income households in the Philippines and identify the factors influencing undiagnosed hypertension. The analysis is based on observations from 516 people with hypertension from low-income households in the Philippines as part of the RESPOND study. A survey collected the characteristics of participants with undiagnosed hypertension, which were compared to those with diagnosed hypertension to identify determinants of undiagnosed cases. A follow-up survey one year later gathered data on whether undiagnosed participants had subsequently received a formal diagnosis.
A questionnaire using validated tools was administered at participants’ homes at baseline and follow up, collecting socio-demographic data, general health and hypertension history and care-seeking behaviour, knowledge of hypertension, and blood pressure. Individuals without a prior diagnosis of hypertension but with blood pressure readings >140/90 mmHg were classified as having undiagnosed hypertension, and during the follow-up interview one year later information was gathered on whether a formal hypertension diagnosis was received.
The dataset has been anonymised and contains only variables necessary to underpin the accompanying publication, many of which were derived using data collected by the original questionnaire/tool. Please see the data codebook for details.

The data collection tool was piloted prior to the start of formal data collection and the electronic survey questionnaire data collection platform used incorporated range and logic checks at the point of data entry. Data collection was also conducted by trained researchers, and supervisors conducted prospective reviews of randomly and systematically selected completed questionnaires (5%) with queries addressed and rectified by field researchers.
Adults aged 35–70 either diagnosed with hypertension or screened to have a blood pressure greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg living in low-income communities in the Philippines
All personal and potentially identifiable data of participants have been removed from the data.
