Description

The IMPLEMENT-CVD research project investigated health system factors affecting implementation of fixed-dose combination therapy for hypertension in Kenya.

This dataset contains de-identified transcripts of interviews conducted with patients receiving care for hypertension at government health facilities in Kiambu County, Kenya (24 transcripts) and family caregivers (6 transcripts) during 2022-2023.

Broad themes covered include knowledge of hypertension/CVD, experience of being diagnosed with the condition, experience of (self-)management of the condition, and interactions with health care providers.

Data collection methods

Qualitative interviews conducted with patients and family caregivers to explore their experiences of treatment for hypertension and cardiovascular disease at government health facilities in Kiambu County, Kenya during 2022-2023.

Data analysis and preparation

Data was transcribed and translated into English by professional bilingual transcribers/translators employed by KEMRI-WT. Transcripts were reviewed by interviewers A and B.

Quality controls

Interview transcripts were checked against the source recordings for accuracy. English transcriptions were checked to ensure accuracy.

Population

Patients and their caregivers who were receiving treatment for hypertension / cardiovascular disease at government health facilities in Kiambu County, Kenya.

Privacy

Prior to analysis, direct identifiers such as participant name, birth date, and healthcare staff names were removed. In addition, health facilities names were replaced with a project identifier.

Additional de-identification was performed in preparation for submission to the repository. Patient’s specific age was broadened into 5 year age categories and indirect identifiers were removed, such as location name, health facility details, occupation titles, and project health facility codes. Descriptions of unique experiences, such as individual’s detailed history of care for multiple specific health conditions were removed.

Interview transcripts are made available through controlled access.

Researchers applying for access will be required to provide study details including ethical approval sought/planned (with dates), study objectives, data management plan,  analysis plan, timeframe, potential risks and benefits and planned outputs.
