Description

The VITamin D for AdoLescents with HIV to reduce musculoskeletal morbidity and ImmunopaThologY (VITALITY) trial is a phase III two-site, individually randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were randomised 1:1 to receive weekly vitamin D and daily 500mg calcium carbonate supplementation or placebo for 48 weeks. Participants were followed for a further 48 weeks to investigate the sustainability of intervention effect. 842 children aged 11-19 years with perinatally-acquired HIV resident in greater Harare (Zimbabwe site) or within Lusaka (Zambia site) were recruited. The baseline dataset contains information on the participants' living environment, health status, received treatments, exercise levels, and other information.

Data access conditions

The ability to make data available is constrained by ethical, legal, and contractual conditions associated with the VITALITY trial. The trial team are unable to make the full dataset available due to the presence of participant identifiable and other confidential information. However, access to a subset is permitted on condition that it is fully anonymised and the researcher signs a Data Transfer Agreement (DTA).

Researchers wishing to access the VITALITY baseline dataset for use in research are invited to complete an application form, outlining the data variables that they wish to obtain (listed below). This list will be checked to ensure it does not contain information that may enable re-identification of trial participants. The application will also be checked to ensure that the intended research is achievable using the specified variables.

Applications will be reviewed by the trial Principal Investigator (PI) and representatives from the country where data was collected in the first instance, with advice sought from other trial members. An external reviewer will be sought where needed.

If the application is approved, the applicant will be required to sign a Data Transfer Agreement (DTA) prior to being provided with anonymised data.
