Alternative title

Zero TB Transmission survey (ZTTS)

Description

This record describes two anonymised datasets collected as part of a concurrent adult pulmonary tuberculosis prevalence survey (using digital radiography using CAD4TB and Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra) and child M. tuberculosis infection survey (using QuantiFERON-TB® Gold Plus) using a cluster-based unequal probability random sampling method. The aim was primarily to provide a baseline measure of the burden of adult infectious tuberculosis in Karachi and assess feasibility of conducting QuantiFERON-TB® Gold Plus at scale in children aged 2 to 4 years.

  1. The first survey dataset covers 34,964 adults (aged ≥ 15 years): Each row refers to an adult study participant, indicating their district, cluster, neighbourhood block, age category (mean age for child), sex, CAD4TB score, presence of TB symptoms, eligibility for sputum submission, TB status, previous relevant TB history e.g. contact with TB and TB treatment, and inverse probability and sampling weights.
  2. The second survey dataset covers 2,511 children (aged 2 to 4 years): Each row refers to a child study participant, indicating their district, cluster, neighbourhood block, the overall mean age for child, sex, presence of TB symptoms, QuantiFERON-TB® Gold Plus result, previous relevant TB history e.g. contact with TB and TB treatment, and combined inverse probability and sampling weights.

Data collection methods

Data were obtained through field questionnaire, chest x-ray reading by computer aided detection for adults and results of sputum (adult) and blood (child) samples

Data analysis and preparation

Data were processed prior to sharing to ensure anonymisation. Therefore dates, age of participants and names of tehsils (clusters) have been omitted.  Microbiological results of sputum samples have also been excluded as all samples were only processed at one laboratory and individuals could potentially be identified. This means that some of the analyses using the shared data and code will result in different estimates to the published estimates.

Geographic regions

4 districts in Karachi (Korangi, Karachi South, Karachi Central and Karachi West)

Key dates

Quality controls

Weekly quality checks were performed on the data whilst study was ongoing and data log has been recorded.

Population

Adults aged 15 years and older resident in 4 districts of Karachi and children aged 2 – 4 years.

Privacy

We have removed named tehsils, dates of interviews, chest x-ray, sample collection dates and microbiological results and created age and CAD4TB categories.
