Additionally, there are 6 transcripts that cover 1 adolescent girls and 2 male caregivers at baseline and midline, as well as 23 baseline-only transcripts from 5 adolescent girls, 10 male caregivers and 3 8 female caregivers. Interviewees gave informed consent to participate in an exploratory, quasi-experimental evaluation of the Learning Initiative on Norms, Exploitation and Abuse (LINEA) radio drama intervention to prevent age-disparate transactional sex in Shinyanga region, Tanzania between August and December 2021. In-depth interviews were conducted at three timepoints, corresponding to baseline, midline and endline of intervention implementation. The interviews contain information on gender norms, experiences with age-disparate transactional sex, social norms, attitudes and beliefs linked to age-disparate transactional sex, perceptions of and experiences with the radio drama and discussion session interventions, girl’s experiences during COVID-19 related school closures, and goals and aspirations for the future.

Data collection methods

Amani Girls Home (AGH) researchers conducted all interviews face to face in Kiswahili using a semi-structured topic guide.

Data analysis and preparation

AGH researchers transcribed and translated verbatim all interviews into English. During transcription researchers excluded personal details to anonymise the data.

Geographic regions

Shinyanga region, Tanzania

Key dates

Data were captured between August and December 2021. All anonymised transcripts were available in English by February 2022.

Quality controls

AGH researchers contributed to the construction and ordering of questions, and piloted and refined them prior to data collection. The research team met once a week to discuss how well (or not) the topic guide was working, and if needed they made adjustments.  As transcripts were produced LSHTM researchers reviewed them and provided feedback to interviewers on use of probing, and to translators and transcribers on excerpts that were not clear in English. These excerpts were improved in the final version of the transcripts.

Population

Adolescent girls aged 12-16 years and their male and female caregivers living with them. Sampled households were beneficiaries of the Tanganyika Christian Refugee Service (TCRS), an NGO that works with the poorest households in the community, all of which also have a member of the household living with a disability.

Privacy

All participants were given a unique ID, which were linked to the audio recordings and transcripts of interviews to ensure anonymity. Documents that included participant names, including informed consent documents, were saved separately in an encrypted and password protected file, and the hard documents were saved in a locked box behind closed doors. Personal, potentially identifying information was excluded from transcripts, including the day the interview was conducted and the village the participant lives in.
