A set of code lists were used in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) Aurum or Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) Admitted Patient Care (APC) to identify markers of health-seeking behaviour and healthcare access. These markers were then adjusted for in a vaccine effectiveness study to quantify and account for potential confounding.
Code lists are publicly available and openly licensed on the respective websites.
All markers were identified in relevant lookback periods in a time period prior to defined index dates. These were identified as binary measures.
CPRD Aurum data dates back to 1 January 1995 and HES APC data dates back to 1987. All available lookback data was used for patients, where required to identify markers of interest. The latest collection of the data at the time of data extraction was 31 March 2021 for HES APC and 31 May 2022 for CPRD Aurum. However, to ensure follow-up was consistent across datasets, we ended follow-up on 31 March 2021.
