Description

Dataset containing results of a baseline survey performed by the Stronger SAFE project to identify risk factors for trachoma in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Data was collected from 247 households via structured questionnaire, eye swabs, and Conjunctival field examination between 11 April and 25 June 2018. The dataset contains information on participant socio-demographics, water and sanitation practices, and connectedness of the communication. Findings indicates that personal hygiene in younger age groups (presence of ocular and nasal discharges, infrequent washing of faces and clothing) and fly-eye contacts are potential risk factors for trachoma in this setting, suggesting that hygiene interventions and environmental improvements are required to suppress transmission to ensure sustained reduction in disease burden.

Population

Data was collected from a community in Ethiopia. All household members were assessed for clinical examination. Interviews were collected at a household level.

• Anonymised data may be made available for analysis, subject to access conditions being met.
• The dataset provided to the repository contains some indirect identifiers, such as exact age. However, these will be redacted/processed to protect participant identity.
• Participant identifiable information, such as GPS points, birth date, and examination date have been removed.
• Identifier values, such as person and household ID, are assigned by the study team and cannot be linked to participants.
