Description

Data gathered as part of a study in which we investigated the relationship between management practices and quality of care in a sample of small and medium-sized private facilities in Tanzania. The files include a readme document, questionnaires and tools, the original datasets and do-files containing the code to clean the data, merge datasets, and run the analysis.

Access to the datasets used in the analysis are restricted, as required by the ethics committees at the time they gave approvals. Data are available on request for the sole purpose of replication, in accordance with the Data Use Agreement.

Data collection methods

Our sample comprises private health care facilities that participated in the trial of SafeCare. Between March 7 and Nov 30, 2016, we enrolled and randomly assigned 237 health facilities to the intervention (n=118) or control (n=119). The sample includes dispensaries, health centres and hospitals in both the private non-profit and for-profit sectors. We excluded referral hospitals as well as those providing only specialist services, such as mental health care. We recruited 237 facilities at baseline. During the course of the study, nine facilities closed down, providing us with a sample of 228 health facilities. By design, approximately half the sample is for-profit while the remainder comprises non-profit faith-based facilities. The majority of facilities are dispensaries (55 percent), while 29 percent are health centres and 16 percent hospitals. Around four-fifths are located outside of the largest city, Dar es Salaam, and 40 percent are in rural areas.

We use data from a number of surveys conducted as part of the trial: a health facility survey (Feb 7 and April 5, 2018); clinical observations of infection, prevention and control (Feb 7 and April 5, 2018); health care worker form (Feb 7 and April 5, 2018); standardised patient survey (May 3 and June 12, 2018); and SafeCare assessment (approximately 18 months after the start of the intervention). For a small number of variables used as covariates in the analysis, we also draw on a baseline situation analysis survey and a baseline SafeCare assessment.
