Description

These are data collected during a baseline survey for the creating demand for fishermen’s schistosomiasis HIV services (FISH) cluster-randomized trial in Mangochi, Malawi. The data include socio-demographic characteristics as well as self-reported HIV testing, HIV treatment, schistosomiasis treatment and willingness to attend a beach clinic offered in a context of a study.

Data collection methods

The baseline survey involved face-to-face interviews with fishermen identified from 45 fishing communities (clusters). Data was collected using Open Data Kit (ODK) and Android tablets. A collection of boats and boat crews form the cluster and the data are only about men i.e. fishermen as restricted by the eligibility criteria.

Data analysis and preparation

Data from tablets were uploaded to an SQL server before being downloaded in csv format. Data cleaning was undertaken using Stata with analysis completed in R.

Consistency, validity and all other checks were implemented within ODK. Additional data cleaning in Stata involved checking for duplicate entries and additional validity checks.
