The LSHTM Open Research Survey 2022 was performed to determine awareness and use of open research practices among LSHTM researchers and identify support needs that would enable greater take-up in the future. The survey explored 10 open research practices: [1] Preregistration, Registered reports, [3] Research co-production, [4] Research verification, [5] Sharing preprints & other scholarly works prior to peer review, [6] Open Peer review, [7] Sharing public engagement literature, [8] Code sharing, [9] Sharing of Computer Assisted Designs, and [10] Sharing of physical materials.
The dataset contains responses of the 162 participants who completed the survey. This covers participant familiarity and use of each open research practices at the time they were completing the survey, intent to apply OR practices in the near future, motivations for applying open research practices, concerns and barriers that exist related to take-up and use of open research practices, as well as their training and guidance needs.
The LSHTM Open Research Survey 2022 was conducted by Gareth Knight (LSHTM Research Data Manager) in the LSHTM Library, Archive & Open Research Services, with input from the LSHTM Open Science Working Group.
The survey question list was developed through a review of similar surveys performed by academic organisations related to open science, open research, and open scholarship. The first survey iteration was trialled by the LSHTM Open Science Working Group and 15 LSHTM staff located in in London, Uganda, and Gambia. Updates were made based upon feedback provided.
The survey was delivered using JISC Online Surveys and promoted via faculty/department newsletters, internal mailing lists and LSHTM-wide groups (Yammer). In addition, LSHTM Head of Faculty/Department/Units were asked to distribute the survey to staff within their unit, OSWG members were asked to promote the survey within their groups, and LSHTM authors with data/code recorded in the LSHTM Data Compass repository were contacted and invited to participate.
LSHTM researchers associated with sites located in London, Uganda, The Gambia, and elsewhere.
Data collection was performed over two survey rounds: the first round took place between 6 June – 31 July 2022, which resulted in 91 responses. Due to the low response rate, a decision was made to re-open and re-promote the survey. A second round was performed between 15 August – 2 September 2022, which attracted a further 72 responses.
The survey was completed by academic staff and Research Degree students associated with LSHTM, including those based at the London campus, the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM, and MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, as well as LSHTM-affiliated organisations, such as London International Development Centre (LIDC).
The following processing has been performed to reduce the likelihood of identification:
The LSHTM Open Research Survey was performed as part of the core operation of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The LSHTM Research Ethics Committee (REC) advised that ethics approval was not required.
