Dataset containing measurements collected in a 2012 and 2016 sero-survey, conducted as part of the Magu Health and Demographic System. The aim was to assess the association between fertility desire level and HIV infection before and after earlier antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation programme implementation. The study population was comprised of men and women, aged 15 years and above, who were located in one of nine villages in three wards in North-West Tanzania.

All data were collected on computer tablets or personal digit assistants (PDA), using standardised questionnaires captured by CSPro, and loaded into a SQL database. The primary outcome was the desire to bear one or more child (ren) in the next two years while exposure of interest was HIV infection. HIV status information was obtained from field HIV testing using Tanzanian standards of HIV test.
Data were cleaned and analysed using STATA version 16.1.
The study was conducted at Magu Health and Demographic surveillance system site. The site is located in Magu District, Mwanza Region, Tanzania and consists of all residents in nine villages in three wards in North-West Tanzania.
We collected two sets of data:
The study population comprised of men and women, aged 15 years or over, who were living in the catchment area of Magu HDSS.
North-West Tanzania.
Study participants were assigned a study number, no names were used.

All participants who contributed data for analysis provided written informed consent for study participation, data use and publication of the results. Parents/care giver consented on behalf of study participants who were aged less than 18 years.
