Description

The dataset contains sociodemographic information, health and neurocognitive and psychiatric outcomes of 322 school children who participated in the neurocognitive sub-study that was nested within SONA project. It is supported by two questionnaires that were used to collect these data, and consent and assent forms that were used in the study.

Data collection methods

322 children and adolescents participating in SONA were enrolled in the neurocognitive sub-study and were assessed for neurocognitive impairment using the Kaufmann-Assessment-Battery, and psychiatric disorders (major-depressive-disorder(MDD), attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder(ADHD), generalised-anxiety-disorder(GAD), and substance-use-disorder(SUD) using the parent version of the Child and Adolescent Symptom Inventory-5, and Youth Inventory-4R Self Report.

Data analysis and preparation

Participants’ characteristics were described using means and standard deviations for continuous variables, and proportions for categorical variables. Raw scores on neurocognitive tests were first described using means and standard deviations before the data were categorised into a binary variable. We compared neurocognitive scores based on each of the sociodemographic variables using group means. For each neurocognitive domain and for each age group, raw scores were converted into z-scores by dividing individual scores by the standard deviations in the respective domain. Neurocognitive impairment was defined as having a z-score of less than -2 in any of the domains, or a z-score of -1 in at least two domains.

Associations between neurocognitive impairment, with sociodemographic variables and psychiatric disorders were examined using crude and adjusted logistic regression (adjusting for each variable). Similarly, associations between psychiatric disorder and sociodemographic exposures were examined using crude and adjusted logistic regression analysis to generate odds ratios. For all analyses, the 95% confidence interval was determined.

Geographic regions

The data were collected from schools in Entebbe Municipality and Katabi zone in Wakiso District, central Uganda. This is a predominantly urban setting.

Key dates

Data collection began in March 2016 and completed in August 2016, following which the data were entered, cleaned and finalised.

Quality controls

Data were collected by psychiatric clinical officers who were trained and experienced in the tools.  The data were checked for completion and accuracy by senior clinical psychologist, and the data manager during and after completion of data collection.

Population

Study population were school children aged 5-17 years in Entebbe Municipality and Katabi zone in Wakiso District, central Uganda. They were participating in the SONA study, a research that was examining the prevalence and risk factors of asthma among school age children. However, the majority 258 (80.9%) the children who participated in the neurocognitive study did not have asthma, and therefore considered to represent a normal population.

Privacy

Data has been de-identified, i.e. we have removed identifying information from the data including participant names, name of school from the data that are shared.
