Data description

Survey data collected as part of a study to investigate willingness to participate in COVID-19 vaccine trials among healthcare workers. Survey was completed by 657 healthcare workers in three hospitals in Uganda. The dataset contains variables on socio-demographic information, willingness to participate in a COVID-19 vaccine trial, motivators and barriers to participation, and the effect of different hypothetical trial characteristics on willingness to participate.

Data collection methods

Data was collected using a predesigned standardised electronic questionnaire administered by experienced research assistants using encrypted computer tablets after obtaining informed consent.

Data analysis and preparation

Data from computer tablets were uploaded onto and managed in a REDCap database and subsequently exported to Stata 15.0 (Stata-Corp College Station, TX, USA) for analysis.

Geographic regions

Data was collected at three health facilities in Uganda.

Key dates

Data collection was conducted between September and November 2020.

Quality controls

The electronic questionnaire was designed with automated logic checks and skip patterns to minimize errors. At the end of each day, the study coordinator would perform quality checks on the collected data to identify any potential errors not detected by the automated verification process. Any identified queries were resolved by the respective research assistant/data collector before the data was transmitted to the central study database

Population

Healthcare workers in Uganda

Privacy

Participants were identified only by a unique participant study number in study documents and the electronic database. Documents that contain participants’ names such as informed consent forms were stored separately from other study documents in a secure location with limited access. All databases were password protected.

Dataset processing

The LSHTM Research Data Manager (who manages the LSHTM data repository) produced a dataset that could be made openly available, in accordance with journal requirements. The following variables were removed from the open dataset to reduce re-identification risk, with permission from the research team.
