Data description

Data recorded as part of an evaluation of an environmental hygiene intervention bundle performed in three Tanzanian hospitals. The dataset contains variables on shift type, availability of chlorine, availability of water, ward type, volume of Aerobic Colony Counts as a measure for cleanliness, gel dots removal as a measure for cleaning action, bed occupancy level, and other information. The information was observed.

Sharps disposal and mops storage results

Appropriate sharps disposal was defined as any sharp disposal box in the ward observed which was not full (by guidelines sharps boxes should be at most ¾ full).

Appropriate storage of mops was defined as: can dry freely – e.g. mop head is upward or not touching floor/bucket.

This data was collected in each ward twice a week. Overall, we collected 5823 on storage of mops and sharps disposal.

Number Sharps boxes not full Mops stored correctly
Overall 5823 96% 49%

Descriptively, sharps disposal improved from 90% (95%CI: 88.7-91.5) during pre-training to 99% (95%CI: 98.5-99.2) post-training.

Appropriate storage of mops increased from 66% (95%CI: 63.6-69.2) during pre-training to 83% (95%CI: 82.0-85.2) post-training.

This data is not shown the dataset.

Day number Number indicates day on which measurement was recorded since monitoring began
    1 Day 1
    2 Day 2
Shift Type Time of day that the measurement was recorded
    Afternoon
    Night
Availability of chlorine
no-one at stores There was nobody at the central store to check chlorine availability during that visit
not auditing No auditing in the Chlorine variable refers to the fact that it was not a requirement to audit chlorine during that visit (chlorine was only monitored once a week in each facility rather than twice like other indicators e.g. water)
    Yes Chlorine was available
Blank / Null Data not recorded on this date
Availability of water Availability of water for cleaning
Yes Water was available on date
No Water was not available on date
Blank / null Data not recorded on this date
ACC (Aerobic Colony Counts) Results from dipslides coated with a non-specific agar on one side for measuring total Aerobic Colony Counts (ACC/cm2). This is a proxy for cleanliness
0 Corresponds to volume of ACC/cm2
    >0 to <2.5 Corresponds to volume of ACC/cm2
2.5 to <12 Corresponds to volume of ACC/cm2
12 to <40 Corresponds to volume of ACC/cm2

Binary Dipslides results (based on ACC) Binary: <2.5 cfu/cm2 = clean; ≥2.5 cfu/cm2 = not clean
    <2.5 cfu/cm2 Pass (clean)
    ≥2.5 cfu/cm2 Fail (not clean)

Bed occupancy Occupancy is the number of patients divided by the number of beds in that specific ward. [Note: Number of patients was collected during each visit. For labour ward only it refers to the number of patients present during last shift]
    Low Low bed occupancy
    Medium Medium bed occupancy
    High High bed occupancy
