Description

The Friendship Bench trial was a cluster-randomised trial to investigate the effect of problem-solving therapy training for lay workers on symptoms of common mental disorders among clinic attenders in Harare, Zimbabwe.

12 primary care clinics in Harare were randomised 1:1 to intervention or control. In each clinic, 24 participants were enrolled who were: visiting the clinic (either for their own health needs or accompanying someone else); aged 18 or over; living locally; and screened positive for common mental disorder symptoms. Outcomes were measured after 6 months. 86% of participants were women, 42% were HIV positive and 91% completed follow-up.

This submission contains data and associated questionnaires produced during the trial.

Data collection methods

Research assistants completed a fixed form questionnaire, usually in person, at baseline and after 6 months. A small number of interviews were completed by phone.

Dataset access

The Friendship Bench suicidal ideation dataset (FB_suicidality_interventionarm_130617) contains information collected from 286 study participants. This dataset has been restricted due to the presence of confidential and sensitive information that may potentially be used for participant identification.

Access to an anonymised subset may be provided in some circumstances for the purpose of research verification. Researchers wishing to access the anonymised dataset are asked to take the following steps:

  1. Review the codebook (below) and note dataset variables that you wish to access.
  2. Complete a Request Form for the dataset, outlining the desired variables, the type of analysis to be performed, and any other information necessary to support the data request.

The data request will be sent to the research team for consideration. If the request is approved, the requester or their institution will be asked to sign a Data Transfer Agreement, before being provided with an anonymised copy of the dataset.
