Data description

A dataset on 25 projects that provided data on an internal monitoring evaluation of the Makerere University-Uganda Virus Research Institute Centre of Excellence for Infection and Immunity Research and Training (MUII-plus) research programme. The dataset contains 75 variables on projects adherence to the approved protocol, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), other applicable regulatory requirements, study related training and presence of adequate facilities required for study related procedures.

Project monitoring data codebook

The dataset contains 25 records and 78 variables. 25 records correspond to the projects that were monitored and 78 variables correspond to the items that were monitored.

Variable names ending with

_SIV correspond to variables for the Site Initiation Visit

_F correspond to variables for the Site Initiation Visit follow up

_1st correspond to variables for the 1st interim visit

_2nd correspond to variables for the 2nd interim visit

_close correspond to variables for the close out visit

Value labels: 0 “No” and 1 “Yes”. “No” means the document/facility was not present at a monitoring visit and “Yes” means the document/facility was present at a monitoring visit.

Data collection methods

Data was extracted from research monitoring reports and entered into Excel

Geographic regions

Uganda

Key dates

The data was extracted from research monitoring reports generated between April 2017 and December 2019.

Quality controls

The extracted data was checked by the internal project monitor to ensure consistency with monitoring reports and logs.

Privacy:

A number was assigned to each project included in the dataset to protect privacy of projects involved and no project specific sensitive information was collected as part of the evaluation.

Ethics

This report describes the findings of an internal evaluation undertaken to support learning, following the implementation of internal monitoring to enhance the quality of work undertaken by research trainees. The work was reviewed by the Research Ethics Committee of the Uganda Virus Research and a determination of “non-research”, waiving the requirement for ethical review and approval, was made.  All the investigators gave written permission for the reports on their work to be used for this evaluation and publication.
